Brock Women 2nd, Men Take Home the 2017 OUA Banner

Both the men’s and the women’s team had an exciting and successful weekend at OUA’s. Here’s a recap of racing results from both sides.

On the Heavyweight Women’s side, racing began with an extremely tight finish from the Heavyweight Women’s 2- of Anna Maloney (b) and Amanda Martin (s). They finished just 1 second behind Queens in 1st with Western only coming 2nd by .20 seconds. Maloney and Martin secured a solid 3rd place and were an exciting start to the day. Just an hour later, Maloney (b) and Martin (s) raced the Heavyweight Women’s 2x coming 4th in another tight race. The Heavyweight Women’s 4+ of Isabella Mazzarolo (b), Jenna Osborne, Kayla Krasnor, Brianna Spanics (s), and Kailin Rourke (c) placed 4th by a second to Toronto, Trent, and Western.

First-year Isabell Matwijow placed 6th in the Heavyweight Women’s 1x event, coming up from JV just 2 weeks ago. Julianna Goodfellow (b), Olivia Reynolds, Matwijow, Daria Martie, Mazzarolo, Osborne, Krasnor, Spanics (s), and Rourke (c) placed 4th in the Heavyweight Women’s 8+.

Next up, the Lightweight Women’s 8+ of Serena Weaver (b), Olivia Jose, Nicole Samuelson, Marina Rose, Olivia Bagshaw, Alicia Piazza, Andrea Jansen, Sarah-Jane Mambella (s), and Laura Court (c) placed 2nd to Western. Katie Ayres (b), Piazza, Jansen, Erin Corkery (s), and Court (c) placed 2nd in the Lightweight Women’s 4+ final after a long fight to the 1500m.  To cap off the Lightweight Women’s events, Ayres (b) and Corkery (s) took the LW 2- to a 4th place finish.

The women’s team placed 2nd overall for the 2017 Banner, making this the first time in a long time the women have placed this high.

The men had an extremely successful regatta this year. Starting off with the Heavyweight Men’s 2- of Ian Pierce (b), and Zach Koroll (s) placing 3rd. Next, Brendan Long (b) and Erik Hohnstein (s) placed 5th in the HM 2x. The Heavyweight Men’s 4+ of Ryan Malcowski (b), Nick Heffernan, Alex Roger, Matthew Finley (s), and Mackenzie Boyes (c) took the win over Western and Guelph.

The Heavyweight Men’s 8+ of Noah MacDonald (b), Malcowski, Roger, Hohnstein, Koroll, Pierce, Heffernan, Finley (s), and Boyes (c) came 2nd to Western with just 2 seconds separating the top two finishers.

Kevin Keith started off the success on the Lightweight Men’s side with a 6th place finish the LM 1x as a first-year. The Lightweight Men’s 8+ continued with their 1st place finish from Brock Invite this past weekend with Dylan Vanderloos (b), James Potts, Eric Buchanan, Noah Van Helvert, Zach Whiteley, Jacob Martens, Taylor Ashwood, Owen Voelkner (s), and Aurora Gordon (c). Keith (b) and Brandan Andrews (s) placed 5th in the Lightweight Men’s 2x. Whitely (b), Mackenzie Berkhout, Ashwood, Voelkner (s), and Gordon (c) took the win again in the Lightweight Men’s 4+ over Western and Trent.

The day ended with the Lightweight Men’s 2-. This event would determine the 2017 Banner winner. Andrews (b) and Potts (s) had a phenomenal race to secure first place and to secure the 2017 Men’s OUA Banner.

Also on the men’s side, the JV 4+ of William Holt (b), Malcolm Cavanagh, Brendan Llew-Williams, Zach Neufeld (s), and Luke Arbour (c) placed 2nd. This crew shows lots of potential moving onto the Varsity team.

11 men, 11 women, and 3 coxies will be travelling on Thursday to Burnaby, BC to compete at the 2017 CURCs. We’ll be keeping you in the loop with our travels and results.

Brock to Host One of Five New National Rowing Hubs

Brock University is among five Canadian host sites selected for new Rowing Canada hubs aimed at identifying and training up-and-coming national-calibre rowers.

Rowing Canada announced Thursday, Oct. 26 that Brock University, the University of British Columbia, University of VIctoria, Western University and Trent University have been selected to host the Rowing Canada NextGen Hubs.

Brock Sports Director Neil Lumsden called it a big win for the Badgers rowing program.

“This reflects on the high level of coaching within our program along with our approach to developing our student athletes,” Lumsden said. “It’s a reflection of our rowing program, and Brock Sports as a department.”

Brock head rowing coach Peter Somerwil said it’s also a reflection of the team’s history of producing talented athletes.

“It’s a recognition of Brock rowing’s excellent track record of promoting athletes to the national team level through good coaching, equipment and winter training facilities,” said Somerwil, who pointed out that nearly a quarter of the athletes representing Canada at the 2015 U23 World Championships and FISU Games were Brock athletes.

The NextGen Hubs will provide all-encompassing high-performance services to identify NextGen rowers. Rowing Canada said the Hubs will provide optimal coach-to-athlete ratios, extensive performance planning and enhanced technical coaching capacity. Sport science and sport medicine support will also be embedded within these daily training environments.

The connection between these NextGen Hubs and their local clubs was an integral component in the overall selection process.

“I’m truly excited about the engagement of the rowing community in the process,” said Adam Parfitt, RCA Director, Coach and Athlete Pathways. “They care about Canada’s performance and by putting their hands up, they want to share in the responsibility and process of finding and training our net Olympians.”

The NextGen Hubs are part of a wider strategy that both replaces and builds on the learning and work done in the Row to Podium programs. Establishing these partnerships is a significant step forward in the overall Rowing Canada NextGen Athlete Strategy. This strategy focuses on enhanced programming at a targeted stage in the athlete development pathway. Talent identification programming will be conducted within the NextGen program through partnerships with provincial sport organizations, clubs, schools and institutions.

Mike Purcer, Technical Specialist for Brock’s rowing program, said Niagara has one of the largest concentrations of rowing clubs in the country, which will benefit with events such as monthly training camps.

“As a Rowing Canada Hub Training Centre, high-performance coaches and athletes will have an opportunity to connect to a national team pathway,” Purcer said. “Top club, university and high school athletes will become familiar with the training, technique and learning required to achieve the next level.”

NextGen Hubs were evaluated and selected based on an objective criteria and extensive application process. These environments currently have existing targeted Olympic and Paralympic athletes, embedded coaching support, access to elite training facilities and Sport Science and Sport Medicine programming.

Rowing Canada and NextGen Hubs will be forming one management committee to co-ordinate the overall development and strategic direction of the Hub programming. One of the first tasks will be to assist in the hiring of the Hub coaches.

“The additional coaching expertise that will be part of being a NextGen Hub will help athletes with more personal, one-on-one coaching,” Somerwil said. “It will help athletes and the program keep abreast of the evolving best practices in physiological testing, training methods and procedures for trying out for the national team.”

Lumsden said being named as one of the hubs will help with Brock’s recruiting efforts.

“We become more attractive to student-athlete rowers who want to compete at a high level and advance their careers beyond varsity rowing to potentially represent their country,” he said.

Badgers Step Up at Brock Invite

After an intense week of Selection Camp, the Badgers showed off some impressive results at Brock Invite.

Starting off on the Heavyweight Women’s side, Anna Maloney (b) and Amanda Martin (s) secured second place in the Women’s 2- after having a busy morning in the 2x and 1x. The pair will be looking to gain a few seconds of extra speed to take down Queens in two weeks at OUA Champs. Only 40 minutes later, Maloney and Martin took on the Women’s 2x placing 1st ahead of UOttawa and McGill.

Next up, the Heavyweight Women’s 4+ of Isabella Mazzarolo (b), Jenna Osborne, Kayla Krasnor, Brianna Spanics (s), and Kailin Rourke (c) placed 2nd just behind Western. The Heavyweight Women’s 8+, which consisted of the HW4+ as well as Juliana Goodfellow, Olivia Reynolds, Isabell Matwijow, and Daria Martire, just missed out of a 3rd place finish.

Jumping from the LW4+ to the LW2- were Ayres (b) and Corkery (s) who placed a close 3rd behind UofT and Guelph. Weaver (b) and Mambella (s) also raced the LW2- at placed 5th.

Moving to the Heavyweight Men’s side, Ryan Malcowski (b) and Alex Roger (s) started off the finals with a very close 3rd place finish in the HM2- just behind Queens and Western. The HM4+ of Erik Hohnstein (b), Zach Koroll, Ian Pierce, Nick Heffernan (s), and Mackenzie Boyes (c) placed 3rd just 3 seconds behind Carleton.

Matthew Finley led in the HM1x placing a very convincing 1st. Just 40 minutes later Finley (s) hopped into the HM8+ consisting of Noah MacDonald (b), Malcowski, Roger, Hohnstein, Koroll, Pierce, Heffernan, and Boyes (c) which placed 2nd. The crew will be looking to lock down 1st place against Western in two weekends.

The Lightweight Men had a great showing at Brock Invite. The LM8+ of Dylan Vanderloos (b), Noah Van Helvert, Brandan Andrews, James Potts, Zach Whiteley, Jacob Martens, Taylor Ashwood, Owen Voelkner (s), and Aurora Gordon (c) placed 1st and will be looking to increase their 4 second lead at OUAs.

The LM4+ of Whiteley (b), Mackenzie Berkhout, Ashwood, Voelkner (s), and Gordon (c) placed a very convincing 1st leading Western by 6 seconds. Ashwood (b) and Voelkner (s), Vanderloos (b) and Potts (s), and Andrews (b) and Martens (s) also swept 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the LM2- respectively.

The Novice Men’s and Women’s 8+’s completed their first 2k racing at Brock Invite. The Novice Women’s 8+ placed 3rd, and the Novice Men’s 8+ placed 5th.

Next up is the OUAD (October 27th) and the OUA Champs (October 27th and 28th).

Badgers Secure Top Finishes at Head of the Trent

The Badgers travelled to Peterborough, ON to race the final head race of the Fall season. This year’s Head of the Trent brought top finishes to many of the crews.

The day started with the Heavy Men’s 1x of Matthew Finley. Finley secured 2nd place, only 4 seconds behind Trent. To continue with the singles in Division 1, Lightweight Kevin Keith placed 6th in his first HOTT.

Starting off the women’s singles, alumni Tiffany Rusch and Stephanie Mowder secured 7th and 8th in the Club Women’s 1x. Heavyweight Anna Maloney placed 4th over in the 1x at her first HOTT, and lightweight Katie Ayres placed 6th.

Division 2 began with the Brock’s Heavyweight Men’s 4+ of Nick Heffernan, Ian Pierce, Zach Koroll, Erik Hohnstein, and coxie Mackenzie Boyes. The crew placed 2nd, just behind Western. The Lightweight Men’s 4+ rowed by James Potts, Brandan Andrews, Noah Van Helvert, Dylan Vanderloos, and coxie Aurora Gordon also claimed 2nd. Capping off the men’s events in Division 2, the Heavyweight Men’s 2x of Noah MacDonald and Brendan Long placed 7th, while the Lightweight Men’s 2x of Owen Voelkner and Taylor Ashwood placed 3rd after a close encounter through the canal.

Finishing off Division 2 is the always exciting Alumni 8+. This year’s 8 consisted of Mowder, Rusch, Bobby Fair, Kevin Anstruther, Beth Nelson, Nicole McClure, Jen Beaudette, Teresa Hill, and coxie Carla Edwards. This crew secured a 3rd place finish.

Division 3 began with the Heavyweight Women’s 8+ of Maloney, Olivia Jose, Daria Martire, Juliana Goodfellow, Olivia Reynolds, Sabrina Tigwell, Hannah Wade, Isabell Matwijow, and coxie Kailin Rourke. The HW8+ placed 4th overall behind Western, Trent and closely behind UofT. The Lightweight Women’s 8+ with Erin Corkery, Andrea Jansen, Alicia Piazza, Olivia Bagshaw, Sarah-Jane Mambella, Serena Weaver, Marina Rose, Ayres, and coxie Laura Court placed 2nd behind Western.

The Heavyweight and Lightweight Men’s 8+’s found redemption in Division 4 against Western. The Light Men’s 8+ of Voelkner, Ashwood, Jake Martens, Eric Buchanan, Mackenzie Berkhout, Andrews, Van Helvert, Zach Whiteley, and coxie Aurora Gordon took 1st place with close to a 14 second lead over the Western Light 8+. The Heavy Men’s 8+ of Finley, Heffernan, Pierce, Koroll, Hohnstein, Alex Rogers, Ryan Malcowski, MacDonald, and coxie Mackenzie Boyes also took a 1st place finish with a 4 second lead over Western. Come Brock Invite and OUA’s in a couple weekends these will definitely be races to watch.

Lightweight Men’s 8+

The Women’s 4+’s raced in Division 5 beginning with the Heavyweight Women’s 4+. The crew consisted of Brianna Spanics, Kayla Krasnor, Jenna Osborne, Isabella Mazzarolo, and coxie Kailin Rourke. The HW4+ placed 2nd, behind Western. Next up, the Lightweight Women’s 4+ of Corkery, Jansen, Piazza, Jose, and coxie Laura Court placed 4th behind Western, UofGuelph and UofOttawa.

Heavyweight Men’s 8+

Capping off HOTT in Division 6 were the Novice 8+’s and Women’s 2x’s and the JV crews. The Novice Men’s 8+ completed their second head race with a 10th place finish overall. The Novice Women’s 8+ placed 8th. The Heavyweight Women’s 2x of Maloney and Martire placed 6th overall. The Lightweight Women’s 2x of Mambella and Rose placed 7th. Finally, the JV Women’s 4+ of Matwijow, Tigwell, Goodfellow, Reynolds, and Rourke placed 1st, just ahead of McGill.

Two Weekends to Kick of the Start of the 2017/2018 Rowing Season

To kick of the 2017-2018 rowing season, Brock crews headed London to race in the Western Invitational on September 16^th, and the Novices kicked off their season this past weekend in Welland.

Claiming gold for the Badgers was Matt Finley in the Heavyweight Men’s 1x, Taylor Ashwood and Owen Voelkner in the Lightweight Men’s 2x.

On the Heavy Men’s team, the Heavyweight 2x of Brendan Long and Noah McDonald, Heavyweight Men’s 4+ of Nick Heffernan, Erik Hohnstein, Zach K., Ian Pierce, and Mackenzie Boyes claimed silver as well. The Heavyweight Men’s 2- with Alex Rogers and Ryan Malcowski claimed third.

The Lightweight Men’s 8+ of James Potts, Zach Whiteley, Jacob Marten, Brandan Andrews, Mack Berkhout, Noah Van Helvert, Eric Buchanan, Dylan Vanderloos, and Aurora Gordon, and Lightweight Men’s 4+ of Jacob Marten, Eric Buchanan, Noah Van Helvert, Brandan Andrews, and Aurora Gordon also claimed silver. Kevin Keith placed third in the Lightweight Men’s 1x, as well as the Lightweight Men’s 4+ with James Potts, Kevin Keith, Mack Berkhout, Dylan Vanderloos, and Mackenzie Boyes.

Winning silver for brock on the Heavy Women’s team was Amanda Martin and Anna Maloney in the Heavyweight Women’s 2-, Kayla Krasnor and Jenna Osborne in the Heavyweight Women’s 2x, and Amanda Martin, Anna Maloney, Isabella Mazzarolo, Brianna Spanics, and Kailin Rourke in the Heavyweight Women’s 4+. The Heavyweight Women’s 8+ of Daria Martire, Juliana Goodfellow, Olivia Reynolds, Isabella Matwijow, Hannah Wade, Sabrina Tigwell, Marina Rose, Olivia Bagshaw, and Kailin Rourke placed third in their event.

On the Lightweight Women’s side Erin Corkery, Katie Ayres, Sarah-Jane Mambella, Olivia Bagshaw, Marina Rose, Nicole Samuelson, Oliva Jose, Andrea Jansen, and Laura Court claimed silver in the 8+. Finishing third overall on the women’s team was the Lightweight Women’s 4+ of Erin Corkery, Andrea Jansen, Alicia Piazza, Olivia Bagshaw, and Laura Court.

The Novice rowers also kicked off their season at Head of the Welland 5 Bridges Classic. It looks to be a great season for them as well, boating a Women’s 8+, Men’s 8+ and Men’s 4+.

 

 
All Brock crews are heading to Peterborough to compete at Head of the Trent on September 30th. This is the final Head Race before the start of 2k season.

Badgers Alumni Representing Canada at the Senior World Rowing Championships

The 2017 Senior World Rowing Championships are taking place in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida. The event will begin on September 24th with the last of the A-Finals on October 1st. Brock is well represented at Worlds with two alumni and a former coach competing.

Dave de Groot graduated in 2015 after a very successful university rowing career. Throughout his time at Brock, de Groot secured a bronze medal at the Under 23 World Rowing Championships in the Men’s 4-. Post-graduation, de Groot began training with the Senior National team full-time in Victoria, BC. His first race with the Senior team was this past summer in Lucerne at the World Cup. He begins his first Senior Worlds at 12:21pm tomorrow in the Men’s 4- against USA, Italy, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Another Badgers alumni with a very successful career as a National Team Coxswain and now a coach is Terry Paul. He will be coaching de Groot and the rest of the crew in the M4- starting tomorrow.

Former coach Matthew Buie will be competing in the Men’s 2x. Matthew begins racing at 11:21 on September 25th in the second heat against Norway, France, the Netherlands and Poland.

Badgers Off To A Good Start On The 2017/2018 Fall Season

After an incredible Summer season, all Badgers were ready to hit the ground running at the Brock Selection Camp. Starting on August 28th First Year student-athletes were welcomed into the program, having had a great Summer season as well.

 

Selection Camp included a series of testing to set the tone for the 2017/2018 season, including rounds of seat racing at South Niagara Rowing Club.

 

 

 

Highlights of Selection Camp included seat racing, RADAR testing, Brock’s annual Iron Badger Singles Regatta, and a team bonding dodgeball tournament.

 

A total of 45 singles participated in the Iron Badger Regatta, with all 45 on the water at once. Big thank-yous go to St.Catharines Rowing Club and Ridley Graduate Boat Club for lending the Badgers extra singles for the racing.

Post-Selection Camp, Badgers are ready to take on the upcoming season with solid results in the first week of training together again.

Strong Finishes for Badgers at Canadian Henley

Badgers rowers had a strong showing at Canadian Henley this past weekend. Competing for their home clubs, current athletes competed at the U23, Senior, and Champ level.

On the men’s side Zach Koroll and Nick Heffernan placed 6th in the final of the U23 Men’s Double. Koroll and Heffernan, along with Alex Roger placed 2nd in the U23 Men’s Quad. Roger, Ryan Malcowski, and Ian Pierce, accompanied by alumnus Jacob Thomas, placed 5th in the Senior Men’s Straight Four.

After coming off a successful Canada Summer Games, Luke Gadsdon claimed 2nd in the U23 Men’s Pair as well as in the Men’s Champ Eight.

Matthew Finley had a successful regatta placing 2nd Senior Men’s Single and winning gold in the Men’s Single Dash. He also helped lead Leander Boat Club in winning the Men’s Champ Eight, along with Lightweight Taylor Ashwood. 

Ashwood also had a successful regatta coming 3rd in the U23 Lightweight Men’s Double, as well as placing 4th in the Senior Lightweight Men’s Quad with fellow Badgers Brandan Andrews, Eric Buchanan and Coach Tom Kent. Zach Whiteley, Owen Voelkner, Mack Berkhout, Noah Van Helvert and Coach Tom Kent placed 3rd in the U23 Lightweight Men’s Straight Four. The Lightweight Men grew more successful in the Senior Lightweight Eight and the Lightweight Eight Dash, winning gold in both events. Both boats consisted of Berkhout, Whiteley, Ashwood, Eric Buchanan, Voelkner, Van Helvert, Andrews, Aurora Gordon, and Coaches Tom Kent and Scott Anderson.

On the women’s side Olivia Bagshaw, Alicia Piazza, Sarah-Jane Mambella, Andrea Jansen, Erin Corkery, and incoming recruit Olivia Jose claimed 2nd in the U23 Lightweight Women’s Eight. The same Lightweight Eight,  with the addition of Marina Rose and alumna Jen Beaudette placed 3rd in the Senior Lightweight Eight and then won gold in the Lightweight Women’s Eight Dash. 

The Senior Lightweight Women’s Straight Four of Jansen, Mambella, Piazza, and Beaudette went on to claim 3rd place. Jansen, Mambella, and Piazza, along with Corkery and Coach Swede Burak placed 5th in the Lightweight Women’s Straight Four.

Serena Weaver, rowing for Ottawa, placed 2nd in the Senior Lightweight Women’s Eight.

The Senior Women’s Straight Four of Alyssa Toffolo, Amanda Martin, alumnae Cayley Firth and Stephanie Mowder, and Coach Kathy Boyes placed 4th.

In the Women’s Champ Eight, coxswain Laura Court placed 2nd with Calgary Rowing Club.

 

Incoming Brock rowers also had a very successful regatta.  On the women’s side, Anna Maloney won gold in the U19 Women’s Double as well as in the U19 Women’s Quad. 

On the men’s side, Malcolm Cavanagh claimed gold with his crew in the Senior Men’s 64kg Coxed Four.

In the Senior Lightweight Men’s Eight, Kevin Keith placed 4th with South Niagara Rowing Club.

Jacob Martens won gold in the U19 Men’s Eight and finished 4th in the U19 Men’s Quad.
