The Brock Badgers this Saturday kicked off the head race season at Trent University’s annual Head of the Trent Regatta. Celebrating its 49th year running, university and club rowing crews alike took on the 5 km course along the Trent-Severn Waterway. The great festivities kicks off Trent’s homecoming weekend along with fabulous racing and fun for all universities Alumni.
*Note that the divisions listed below represent the schedule of events and not the level of competition.
The division one head race consisted of several badger crews, the Men’s University single, Men’s University Lightweight Single, Women’s University Single, and the Women’s University Lightweight Single.
In
the Men’s University single event Oskars Rugelis came 8th, followed by first
year baby badger Francis Shein in 15th place out of 20 university singles.
Second
year Thomas Markewich, took first place in the University Lightweight Men’s
single event. Beating rival out Western University, and 9 other university
crews such as Guelph, Carleton, and U of T.
Second
year Bonnie Reynolds placed 6th and first year Erin Broski came 8th, in the
Women’s University single event.
Jordan
Isnor, came top three in the Women’s University Lightweight event placing third
next to Queen’s University in second, and Western first.
Division two held the Women’s University 8+,
Men’s University 4+, Lightweight Men’s University 4+, and the JV Women’s double
events.
The
heavyweight, lightweight, and JV women’s crews all participated in the Women’s
8+ race. The varsity heavyweight women’s crew came second to Western (from bow;
Jenna Veerman, Sabrina Tigwell, Shayna VanBeilen, Isabella Mazzarolo, Amanda
Martin, Brianna Spanics, Shannon Van Baalen, and Anna Maloney, coxed by Sophia
Buzzell) followed by the mighty lighties in fourth place (from bow; Olivia
Jose, Andrea Jansen, Catorina Cormier, Serena Weaver, Madeline Hingston, Jordan
Isnor, Alicia Piazza, and Erin Corkery, coxed by Brooke Kew). The Junior
Varsity eight also competing in the event came a solid seventh against Ottawa
University (from bow; Hana Parkin, Olivia Reynolds, Everest Masselink, Hannah
Wade, Abigail Verge, Sydney Wilkins, Melanie Lachnit, and Olivia Sommer, coxed
by Kit Wright).
The
Badgers in the Men’s University 4+ event, came second to Western University
(from bow; David Campbell, Sam Stewart, Erik Hohnstein, and Brandan Andrews,
coxed by Riley Pizek).
In
the Men’s Lightweight 4+ event, the Brock lightweight men came first beating
out Western and Queens in the top three (from bow; Noah Van Helvert, Cameron Hickman, Jacob Martens,
Owen Volkner, coxed by Liam Bull).
In
the last event of the Division 2 race was the JV double event, where the women
came seventh out of fourteen schools across Ontario and Quebec (from bow;
Kailin Rourke, Rowan O’Neill).
Division 3 held some speedy racing in the Women’s University Double, Women’s Lightweight double, and the Men’s University JV 4+.
In
the Women’s University Double, Bonnie Reynolds and Erin Broski, fought their
way into third place, out of 15 other crews.
The
Women’s Lightweight Double was a well battled race, where Jennifer Beaudette
and Carly Zanatta beat out 10 boats, coming in a well deserved first place.
Lastly
in Division 3, the Men’s Junior Varsity crews took the Trent-Severn Waterway by
storm. Coming in hot in first place; Jack MacIntyre, Jared Boles, Ashraf Salih,
James Kwinecki, coxed by Luc Arbour. Not too far behind another Brock JV crew
came second on the line up; James Bell, Adam Muldoon, Ethan Keeso, Lukas Sty,
coxed by Liam Bull. Followed by a third JV crew in seventh out of eleven; Noah Homiak, Hudson Boisvert, Austin
Hurley, Mitchel Kvacica, coxed by Magtha McCormack.
Division 4 held stiff competition, but the Brock Badgers were willful in their fight with grit and passion.
In the Men’s University 8+ race, the Badgers came to a close second, beside Western in first and Guelph University in third place (Erik Hohnstein, Brandan Andrews, Josh Chiarot, Ben Hersche, Francis Shein, David Campbell, Michael Ciepiela, Daniel Brophy, coxed by Riley Pizek).
The
second event in Division 4, was the Men’s Lightweight 8+. The Lightweight men
battle paddled it out to first place, opening the gap between them and the
Western’s University crew (from bow; Kevin Keith, Cameron Hickman, Noah Van Helvert, Owen Volkner, Thomas
Markewich, Stephen Harris, Jacob Martens, Jacob Giesbrecht, coxed by Liam Bull). Following Western our second Lightweight 8+
placed third overall (Ashraf
Salih, Jack MacIntyre, Samuel Maconco, Lukas Stys, Jared Boles, Adam Muldoon,
Antonio DiDomenico, Ivan Cunko, coxed by Luc Arbour).
The speedy race of the Women’s University 4+ race was met with much power and drive. From bow to stern; Amanda Martin, Brianna Spanics, Shannon Van Baalen, and Anna Maloney, coxed by Sophia Buzzell, came first, followed by a second four racing their way into fifth out of nine (from bow; Jenna Veerman, Shayna VanBeilen, Sabrina Tigwell, and Isabella Mazzarolo, coxed by Magtha McCormack).
The
Brock Badger Lightweight women came second in the Women’s University
Lightweight 4+ event, in between Western in first and Trent University in
second (from bow; Alicia Piazza, Jennifer Beaudette, Carly Zanatta, and Erin
Corkery, coxed by Brooke Kew). From bow; Andrea Jansen, Olivia Jose, Serena
Weaver, and Madeline Hingston, coxed by Kit Wright, came just behind Trent’s
lightweight 4+, fourth out of seven boats.
Lastly,
in the Division 4 event, the JV Men’s double, held much promise for Olen Noel
and Jacob Gula. The boys came to a close second, passing Trent University and
University of Waterloo Rowing Club along the way.
The concluding racing line up in Division 5 consisted of the Women’s Novice 8+, Men’s University Double event, Men’s University Lightweight double, and lastly the JV Women’s 4+.
Kudos
goes out to the up and coming novice women’s crew, who have shown much Badger
pride in their early rowing careers. The women placed thirteenth in the race,
next to the University of Montreal (Kavya Kamalasanan Nandalan, Edith Turpel,
Abigail Stewart, Joyce Khouzam, Courtney Albanese, Mariska Andrade, Julika
Frome, Olivia Tanham, coxed by Luc Arbour). Great work ladies!
The
Men’s University Double Event, with (bow) Oskars Rugelis and (stroke) Sam
Stewart, came with a high speed second place, in between Western in first and
Trent in third.
Thomas
Markewich and Stephen Harris, snuffed out the competition coming in a HOTT
(Head of the Trent) first place, followed by Western University and University
of Montreal.
Concluding
the races of the Saturday festivities, was the JV Women’s 4+ event. The women
fought long and hard down the 5km course and came top three next to Western in
second, and Trent University in first. From bow to stern, Megan Scheuring,
Casey Botbyl, Kady Wellman, and Everest Masselink, coxed by Magtha McCormick.
Saturday’s racing concluded many success and much opportunity for growth before the badgers next regatta on October 12, Brock Invitational Regatta.
